Doily - Second Attempt

It's been far too quiet around here, sorry!

We're slowly getting caught up again with life. Hubby is lots better, my mouth is slowly healing, and I'm able to eat a bit more each day. Today, we just got back from the doctor's office for poor little sick guy. =( It turns out that it's nothing major, but it's good that they checked him with all those symptoms going on.

While he finished lunch and rested, I figured that I would process pictures of what I've done over the week.

First up: Another doily completed! This one turned out much better than the last one, but I was still pretty tentative about messing up another one, so I was quite timid and slow about finishing it.

This is actually supposed to be another "trial" doily so that I could do the "real" one in another color as a gift. ...I'm running out of time.

Glor's amazing and careful instructions of this 93 year old pattern are wonderful!! There are helpful pictures along the way, too.
So now, I just need to starch it. She says that it can be blocked by starching or ironing/spray starch. I've never done either way, so if any of you have pointers, let me know!

I'm off to read some books before naptime. I'll check back in shortly.

  1. The doily looks great. Definitely keep us posted as to how starching goes (something I've never done either).

  2. Nice doily! I actually found some really cute and unusual looking doily patterns on free patterns.com and downloaded a few. There's this one pattern I want to buy when I get paid at e-Patterns.com ... it's so pretty with swans all around the outside edge, figuring that if I'm going to stress my eyes crocheting with thread and a tiny hook, I'll try to at least knock someone's socks off - if even just mine LOL
I generally don't do thread crochet anymore because my old eyes don't like it anymore...maybe one day I can afford to buy a Daylight Lamp with a magnifying loop to do some because I think thread crochet is so pretty!

    Have a lovely day!

  3. Your doily is so pretty. I used to love crocheting doilies but I haven't done one in a long time. My eyes aren't so good any more, either..

  4. That's really pretty! I wish I could do that, but I don't know how to crochet.

  5. CrochetBlogger--I'll let you know!

Doris--Swans! Sounds amazing. Can't wait to see it!

    Tina--Thanks!

Em--but your tatting is spectacular!!!! My great-grandmother did some amazing tatting, and I have some of her tools right now. I just don't know what to do with them! I keep wondering if I should try it sometime... Saw a "how-to" book at Hobby Lobby the other day!

  6. Mindy,

You did a wonderful job on your doily. If you don't have time to make another doily you could always dye the white one.

I have spray starched doilies before and it works good enough, but if you want really stiff doilies you will have to use the old method of the powder starch and mixing it with water. Which I have done also, but don't like to. My Mom uses that to starch her doilies.

I hope you have a wonderful week.

    Hugs,
    Tamara

  7. Ooooh so pretty! Again, I block with pins and then iron. I spray with the starch and then iron again.

  8. Thanks for the advice, Tamara and Megan. I'll try it soon...when I'm feeling brave.

  9. It's beautiful! What color will you be making the 'real' one in?

I don't normally work with thread so I'm no help with starching (although I've lots of experience ironing starched uniforms from my years in the Marine Corps!)

  10. Thanks, Marie Anne! I'm hoping to do one in red.

Oh, I bet you do! Do you absolutely detest ironing now? I did spray starch with it last night, but since I've never done it (except clothing), I don't really know what I should be looking for as a finished product. ;-) But I'm happy with it, I think.
